How much can Luxembourg offer to Yemen?

Luxembourg will donate 1.8 million euros to Yemen this year, responding to the grave humanitarian crisis that has hit the country.

Luxembourg’s financial commitment was announced on Tuesday by Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action Romain Schneider, at the donors conference for Yemen in Geneva, Switzerland.

“This assistance will be implemented mainly in cooperation with Luxembourg humanitarian partners such as the World Food Program, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, under the multi-annual bilateral partnership agreements which Luxembourg maintains with these humanitarian agencies,” the government said in a statement.

According to Schneider, the mobilisation of the international community “is necessary to give hope and opportunity to thousands of Yemenis, especially children subjected to disproportionate suffering.”

The minister concluded, “Luxembourg regards free access of humanitarian aid to a country ravaged by conflict since 2015 as an essential principle.”

Yemen is a country at war where hunger kills thousands of people. About 19 million Yemenis need urgent help.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on the parties involved in the Yemeni conflict to engage in dialogue to end the two-year war and, above all, to facilitate the passage of humanitarian aid.
