Emirati tried to kill American and got life in jail

The State Security Court at the Federal Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal ruling of life sentence for a 30-year-old Emirati.

The defendant was found guilty of attempting to kill an American in Abu Dhabi, by knocking him down with his car and attempting to join Al Nusra Front, a terrorist organisation in Syria.

The man was also found guilty of plotting to commit terrorist crimes and attempting to bomb landmarks in the UAE.

According to court documents, the defendant set up social media accounts to promote terrorist ideology of Al Qaida and Daesh terrorist organisations. The man also published lectures and statements by Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, leader of the terrorist group Daesh and inciting youth to join it.

The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals sentenced the man to 25 years in jail against which he appealed to the Federal Supreme Court.

In another case, a 37-year-old citizen of the Comoros Islands, a 25-year-old Emirati and a 24-year-old Emirati, were acquitted of all charges of joining a terrorist organisation, possessing arms without permit and publishing information to promote terrorist ideology of Daesh.

In a third case, a 25-year-old Emirati woman, had her case hearing adjourned to June 5, when the court will give its ruling.

The woman appealed against the lower court’s sentence of five years in jail after she was found guilty of attempting to join Daesh, financing it and promoting its terrorist ideology.

The woman also asked that she be moved from Al Wathba prison to another prison for psychological and health reasons.
